The Bombay High Court was notified on Wednesday by the State government that legal notices have been formally filed against 2,493 fake doctors //in the State of Maharashtra.
Following a case of negligence, public interest litigation was filed against a fraudulent doctor by a Govandi resident, Mariappa Gangau. His pregnant wife had died following medical negligence while under the treatment of an unqualified bogus doctor.
The report was presented before the Bombay High Court by assistant government pleader, Pradeep Patil. The report reveals that, 69 cases have been filed in Mumbai itself against quacks of which one cased has been proven guilty, 63 cases are pending for court hearing and about five are presently being examined in various lower courts.
The highest number of allegations of fake doctors has been from Nagpur with the number of cases filed touching 177 closely followed by Jalgaon where 174 cases were filed.
The High court, however has issued a statement saying the case brought forward by the petitioner cannot be presented before the court as public interest litigation. The High court has opined that the issue highlighted was concerning a personal grievance that the petitioner has against the doctor.
