Magnesium Supplements for Strong-boned Girls

In a research conducted by Yale university scientists led by Thomas Carpenter, findings were reported that would recommend magnesium supplements for girls, as their effects// would be seen well beyond menopause.

As reported the scientists carried out a trial on 120 girls aged 8 to 14 years. Some participants were put on magnesium supplements of 300 mg dose and others on a placebo.

At the end of the trial, bone mineral content (an indicator of bone health) was found to be significantly more in the hips of the girls on magnesium supplements as compared to those treated a placebo. The lumbar spine bone mineral content also increased, but not as significantly.

There were no serious side effects reported other than mild diarrhea in some girls.

The trial shows the importance of magnesium in building stronger bones in teenage girls which would contribute to lessening the risks of osteoporosis and other bone disorders as they age.

Magnesium is an important element in the human body, participating in more than 300 reactions. Sufficient amounts of magnesium help maintain normal physiological functions.

The daily-recommended allowance for magnesium is 240 mg for girls age 9 to 13 and 360 mg for girls aged 14 to 18 years.

Common sources of magnesium include cereal and oat bran, pulses, spinach, brown rice and peanuts.
