Magnesium Levels to Detect the Outcome of Brain Injury

According to a study conducted by Dr. Martina Stippler it was found that magnesium levels in the brain can predict the outcome of brain injury//. A team at the University Of Pittsburgh Brain Trauma Research Center studied initial blood magnesium levels in 83 patients with severe brain injuries. The study results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in San Francisco.

The results show that 35 of the patients had normal magnesium levels while 48 had low levels. After six months duration patients with low serum magnesium levels had significantly worse outcomes. Hence in conclusion the researcher says that better outcomes can be desired by replenishing serum magnesium levels as soon as possible in traumatic brain injury patients. But further tests and study are necessary to validate the study.
