Maggie Daley to Undergo a Surgery Biopsy to Remove a Tumor from Her Breast

Maggie Daley, Mayor Daley’s wife was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2002.//

But the doctors recommended chemotherapy till Jan 2006 and suddenly revised her course of treatment and are planning to go in for a surgery biopsy to remove a residual tumor from her right breast. The procedure will be performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital under a local anesthesia and is expected to last about an hour. The mayor plans to stay by her side during the surgery. Dr. Kevin P. Bethke, Maggie Daley's physician said that Maggie Daley’s condition was stable and well controlled.

Maggie Daley accepted a $1 million grant from Abbott Laboratories which will be solely used to create a science component of After School Matters, the award-winning arts and education program pioneered by Chicago's First Lady to provide a constructive alternative for teenagers. She said that such courses would set sparks to create future scientists. She praised all the recent advances in science in the field of cancer research and also said that without these advances and discovery she would not be alive today. She said that she is still under treatment and was very happy for all the well wishes and was strengthened by the outpouring of encouragement and support.
