Chikungunya, a relatively rare form of mosquito-transmitted viral fever//, has claimed two lives in Madhya Pradesh and hundreds are suffering from the disease, health officials said.

The disease, which has been reported in Madhya Pradesh for the first time, reportedly entered the state through villages in Betul district bordering Maharashtra, they said.

Chikungunya, which gives a stooped posture to the victim as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease, is transmitted through the bites of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The fever is caused by an alphavirus.

A medical team from Hamidia Hospital, the state's biggest, that visited villages in Betul last week has confirmed the presence of chikungunya.

The figure of affected villages in Betul is more than 120.
