MRSA Causes Man To Face Prospect Of Losing Leg

Sandy Davidson, who was being treated for a bowel complaint, now faces the risk of losing his leg after he caught the MRSA superbug in the hospital. // His left foot became infected when he was being treated, but nurses told him it was nothing. He was sent home, but returned four months later only to learn that gangrene had set in.

"I've been told I'm on the point of losing my leg. I feel really let down by the hospital and the doctors. You're supposed to go into hospital and come out feeling better, not more ill than you were before. I'm extremely worried. I won't be able to cope if I lose my leg," Davidson, 61, lamented. Surgeons are to examine his leg tomorrow to decide on the next course of action.

"It beggars belief that this can be allowed to happen. I put my trust in the hospital and staff, but now I'm worse off than I was before. I'm preparing myself for the worst, but I really don't know how I'm going to react if I lose my leg. It's my worst nightmare," he said.

Alex Johnstone, the Tory MSP for the Northeast said hospitals should be more careful. "It shows that MRSA is an ongoing problem that is not being dealt with. It's now getting to the stage where going into hospital for any reason is becoming dangerous."
