MMR Vaccines on Its Way to Regain Past Glory

MMR shots found itself in the eye of a storm in the latter part of the nineties, after it was linked to autism in some cases.// Recent statistics enabled by the government show that parents have reconfirmed their faith in the MMR shots, and are well on their way to protect their children from Measles, Mumps and Rubella.

The number of MMR vaccinations for children has shown a steady increase in the second consecutive year, recent figures show. Nearly 84% of two year olds had availed immunization in 2005-2006, up by 81% since 2004-2005. The count of vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus and polio is status quo, at 94%, since five years. Immunizations for whooping cough and Hib did not see too many ups and downs for a decade, staying at 94%.

As per the recommendations of The World Health Organization, it is important that atleast 95% of children receive three doses of diphtheria, tetanus, polio and pertussis during the first year of life. Atleast 95% should be vaccinated with the first dose of mumps vaccine between first 12-18 months of life.
