Lumping a Lumpectomy Difficult for One-third of Women

Nearly a third of women who under go lumpectomy feel that the outcome is a significant compromise on cosmetics, affecting the way// their breasts look, a recent survey has revealed.

The annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2006 conference in San Francisco was witness to the findings of the survey, which inferred that the majority of unhappy lumpectomy patients would explore the possibility of reconstructive breast surgery.

Among 28 percent of the patients who expressed unhappiness with the appearance of their breasts post-lumpectomy, nearly half of the lot were extremely put-off with the appearance, and were seriously debating a cosmetic chest-lift surgery.

Dr Howard Wang, co-author of the study said, “Patients should know their options and understand that just because they undergo a lumpectomy to save their breast does not mean they will be happy with the cosmetic outcome."
