Loop Incision Treatment Enhances Premature Delivery Risk

The risk of having a premature baby is up for women who have undergone a widely practiced treatment of the cervix to eliminate precancerous cells, called LEEP or loop// incision, researchers from Melbourne University revealed.

After conducting a study involving 5000 women, researchers said that nearly 1,500 premature births could have been averted if loop incision was avoided. Babies born prematurely are seen battling a host of health problems.

According to researchers, laser ablation, another method to destroy precancerous cells was not connected with this risk. They have sounded an important message to re-look at the benefits of laser treatments in cutting down potential risks in the treatment of cancer.

They wrote: ‘To aid informed choice, women should be provided with information about the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of treatment and the importance of modifiable risk factors for subsequent successful pregnancy outcome.’

It is imperative that women are informed about the impending risks of cervix treatment using the LEEP method so that they could take an informed decision.
