Lions Club Plans to Increase Free Healthcare for Poor

Hoping to enrich existing healthcare facilities, Lions Club of Calcutta will reach out to more poor people with free services in its golden jubilee year.

"All the three healthcare units we have opened in Kolkata are still under-utilised by the patients. We have now set a target to reach out to more number of people by increasing our free services," Lions Club International's senior functionary K.N. Gupta told a press conference Tuesday.

"We have also made a plan to develop medical infrastructure in our existing hospitals in next few years," said Gupta, who is also chairperson of the club's eyecare facility, Netra Niketan.

He said Lions Club International, the world's largest voluntary service organisation with a presence in over 200 countries, would install a specialised camera to facilitate diabetic retina operations at the Calcutta Lions Netra Niketan.

"The machine would cost around Rs.5 million and would be the first such advanced medical equipment installed in any Lions Club Hospital for diabetic eyecare," Gupta told IANS.

Lions Club of Calcutta has founded two speciality eye care units in Kolkata and one general eye hospital in Hooghly district of West Bengal. It also has five satellite clinics, including two in Hooghly district.

The club conducted about 27,000 eye related operations last year here.
