Link Established Between Ecstasy and Depression

Ecstasy is a drug that is completely banned from use as a treatment for depression. It is otherwise called as methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). It helps the body // relax, reduces inhibitions and increases energy and brings feelings of euphoria. Doctors say that these drugs only enhance these symptoms rather than cause them.

The study conducted by the Dutch researchers found that children who suffered from depression used these drugs when they grew up. Mostly these drugs are used due to the pre-existing problems in the patient’s life rather than the current situation.

Anja Huizink, assistant professor at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam said that these drugs could worsen their situation. She also tells that people who are at a higher risk should not use these drugs.

It was introduced in the 1970s to treat depression. But now it is mainly used by youth especially clubbers. Statistics of the United Nations show that the use of ecstasy increased by 70 % between 1995 and 2000. Chronic exposure to the drugs has severe side effects such as increase in depression symptoms and other health problems.

This is clearly seen by the study conducted by the Dutch researchers among 1,580 individuals over 14 years. The results were published in the British Medical Journal made them wonder about the usefulness of the drug. Further research has to be done to link ecstasy and depression.
