Light Drinkers Tend to Shirk Work Often

People, who consume alcohol occasionally, tend to opt for sick leave the following day due to the hang over caused by alcohol.//

Kenneth Pidd, from the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction at Flinders University works as a research officer; he said that in a year the estimated loss due alcohol related abseentism is $473 million as the number of days rise to at least 2.6 million work days.

He claims, "Low-risk drinkers and infrequent or occasionally risky … drinkers accounted for 49 to 66 per cent of alcohol-related absenteeism."

"You can have people who might only drink 10 beers in a year, but drink them all at once - they might not have long-term health consequences but there are short-term problems such as risk of injury and assault."

In Medical Journal of Australia, a study by Dr Pidd suggested that the total nuber of leave taken by light drinkers are higher than few of those problem drinkers.

He said that it is a known fact that these problem drinkers put their health at stake in the long run but at least they do not take leave often.

Christmas parties conducted at office often had most of the infrequent drinkers to consume alcohol excessively.

As the drinker gets older he/ she reduced the number of sick leaves.

Paul Ritchie, spokesperson of ABL State Chamber, a business group said that even problem drinkers had showed effects at work because of impairment of their overall perfomance.
