Latest Research on Insomnia/Narcolepsy

A latest research shows promise for people suffering from insomnia, particularly narcolepsy - a chronic disorder by which people are unable to stay awake during waking hours.//

The first phase of the trial was conducted by a team of Switzerland scientists, studying 70 males for about 12 hours, who were healthy and do not have any pre-historical disease or any related problems.

They found that when orexin, a neuropeptide that is produced in the brain is blocked in the persons; they are able to stay awake during the day as they are getting better rest at night.

The National Institute of Health reported that there are more than 135,000 people who suffer with narcolepsy in the United States. So far there have not been any medications to help narcoleptics to lead a consistent and fully normal state of alertness.

Now, a drug patented by a Swiss drug company is been developed for blocking the brain receptors, which respond to orexin. This may help treating narcoleptic and insomniac patients to achieve more restful sleep during the night and allow fuller wakefulness during the day.
