Knowing how weight loss aids in diabetes

According to researchers at the Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Dallas, there is a new study which hopes to discover the impact that weight loss can make in decreasing the complications of diabetes.// Colleagues and the researchers are joining people into the first long-term study on how weight loss affects the outcome in type 2 diabetes.

With about 30 per cent of the population now classified as overweight, and diabetes seemingly reaching epidemic proportions, it is never been more urgent to look at this question. Volunteers in the study will be assigned either to the Lifestyle Programme. In the Lifestyle group, they will be helped to lose at least ten per cent of their body weight through calorie reduction and taking regular exercise aiming for a 25 minute walk a day. The Education group will be offered sessions on nutrition and physical activity, and the chance to attend a support group.

Over the next 10 years, the researchers will look at how weight loss impacts on cardiovascular risk factors, the incidence of diabetes complications, general health and quality of life. The result will be of great significance to people with diabetes.
