Kerala Doctors on Strike

They are at it, once again. Doctors have been on strike last three days, protesting against the arrest of Dr. P.Ashokan, of Kottayam Medical College// by a police officer.

Dr Ashokan has been accused of causing the death of a youth at the Kottayam Medical College hospital through acts of ‘negligence’ and ‘corruption’.

KGMCTA, Indian Medical Association, P G Association and Medical College Students Union called the strike. The doctors of both government and private sectors have decided to go on strike starting this Friday.

They demand that the charges against Dr. Ashokan should be withdrawn and that an expert committee, comprising the District Medical Officer, public prosecutor and forensic expert, should probe the incident as per the Supreme Court directives.

According to a panel of doctors in charge of the situation, unless the doctors were freed from the fear of being manhandled and assaulted for every death that occurs in hospitals, they will not be able to discharge their duties.

The panel also seeks better infrastructure for government hospitals.

At Kottayam Medical College hospital, casualty, emergency services and a parallel out patient clinic have been functioning as usual.
