Job Burn Out May Stoke Up Diabetes

Now, there is one more impact of a job burn out. Apart from it affecting productivity in one's job, it could also stir up a host of ailments, say Scientists. //This study supports the various academic endeavors which has shown that stress at work can contribute to high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, flu, and heart disease.

A study of 677 workers in Israel revealed that risk of Type 2 Diabetes was almost 1.8 times pronounced in people who experienced job burn out due to high stress. The finding did not change even after considering important categories like age, sex, exercise and obesity. Stress was also linked to unhealthy eating pattern and consumption of alcohol which led to many ailments.

According to Richard Surwit of the Duke University Medical Center, stress can hamper the body's capacity to process glucose, more so in people who have a genetic predisposition to diabetes.

The Researchers surmise, 'It is possible that these people are prone to diabetes because they can't handle stress very well. Their coping resources may have been depleted not only due to job stress but also life stresses, such as stressful life events and daily hassles.'
