Jharkhand Ropes in Private Players for Health Scheme

In a unique public-private partnership in healthcare, the Jharkhand government has set up a trust that will ensure medical care for the poor that will be partly funded// by private investors in the state.

The Sarva Swasthya Mission Trust is the brainchild of Chief Minister Arjun Munda who has roped in major investors to provide funds. He has also mooted a proposal for a health card for poor families.

"Private investors like the Tata Group, Essar, Jindal group and others have assured to contribute to the trust to help the poor," said a government official.

"The Tata group has assured to give Rs.250 million per year for a period of 30 years. The other groups will also contribute handsome amounts."

The trust aims to reach out to people in the rural areas of the state and help the poor, particularly the below poverty line (BPL) families, to get access to affordable and good quality medical services.

The percentage of BPL families in Jharkhand is 52 percent.
