Jharkhand Chemists to Boycott Viagra

Chemists in Jharkhand are refusing to stock the sexual elixir Viagra saying that it would lead people to "berserk and create law and order problems." Viagra hit Indian shores// seven years after it created waves worldwide for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

"We will not sale the drug as it may lead to some people going berserk and creating law and order problems," said Amar Sinha, general secretary of the Jharkhand Chemist and Druggist Association (JCDA). The manufacturer of Viagra, which is chemically sildenafil citrate, is launching the product in India next week. Sinha says that they have requested Pfizer not to bring Viagra to Jharkand. "We have informed Pfizer not to launch the drug in Jharkhand. If our request is heeded, we will boycott the drug," said Sinha. A medical shop owner also echoed the comments voiced by Sinha, “The common practice here is to sell medicines even without a prescription. But Viagra is supposed to be sold strictly on prescription. We fear many customers will demand Viagra without producing a prescription and that may create law and order problems." Sinha said that if Viagra made it to the state then the drug dealers would make a neat profit, but that did not mean that they were prepared to risk the lives of other people since the youth in the state were already high on cough syrups.
