Japanese Face High Risk Of Heart Attack And Stroke, Metabolic Syndrome to Blame

A new study has pointed out the alarming incidence of metabolic syndrome among the Japanese population. According to official statistics, more than 25 million people, approximating// to one-fifth of the total population face a high risk of heart attack and stroke.

In view of this health threat, the government health officials have stressed the need for drastic changes in the diet and do more exercise, if these effects were to be reversed.

A health report prepared by the health ministry has highlighted that more than 13 million Japanese suffer from metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by abdominal obesity.

Individuals with metabolic syndrome face an increased risk of developing hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes. Most importantly, the condition has been projected to affect another 14 million people, if appropriate steps are not taken at the earliest.

Japanese diet is primarily a low fat diet, based on rich servings of fish, vegetables and rice. The drift of the Japanese from this traditional diet to the so-called junk food is partly blamed for this situation.
