JIPMER Medicos On 48-Hour Long Strike

The resident doctors and students of Centrally administered Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for Post-graduate Medical Education and Research(JIPMER) // in Pondicherry today began a 48-hour long strike protesting against the reservation in elite educational institutions.

A batch of resident doctors also went on a 48-hour long fast inside the campus urging the Centre to review its decision.

A spokesman of the resident doctors' association told reporters here that they have also submitted a memorandum to the JIPMER authorities referring to the implications of reservation.

He said there would be 'token agitations' next week.

Spokesman of the JIPMER management told reporters that the emergency services and casualty wing were functioning as usual. The OPD section also was not closed but only those in serious condition were taken care of.

Medical officers and para medical staff were on duty. But only urgent surgeries were conducted. The routine hospital services were not severely affected by the strike, he said.
