Aggression is traditionally thought of as a characteristic trait of man. Often it is mistaken for manliness //and other socially acceptable attributes of man. But can it be linked to the size of the fingers in a man’s hand? A recent study in the current issue of Biological Psychology says just that.

Finger length ratio is the ratio of second finger or index finger to the fourth or ring finger. The study says lower finger ratios are thought to be masculine and associated with athletic prowess in man. Smaller digit ratios are also due to higher prenatal testosterone levels, and greater sensitivity to androgens. In other words, male hormones are responsible for lower digit or finger ratios.

The study tested the finger ratios against perceived aggression in men and women. The results say that men with lower finger length ratio had higher trait physical aggression scores. However, there was no correlation between the digit ratio and aggression in females. The researchers conclude that the male hormone testosterone has a total effect on the characteristics of men, including behavioral manifestations and physical attributes.
