Interview With a Surgeon Hidden Hero of the NHS

On National Doctors day we interviewed a doctor - Dr.Makani Hemadri, who has seen the best of both worlds. He sees the current problems facing the doctor community at large objectively. Many doctors from India take care of healthcare systems in the world. Apparently almost 25,000 doctors of Indian orgin serve the National Health Service of England. In the US, Middle-East and in countries as distant and remote as Fiji, Belize and Zambia one can find Indian doctors doing a great service to these communities. Many have left the country for better prospects and like the computer technocrats command a good position in the society and are highly respected for their skills and care. The national doctors day is a celebration for all doctors from India be they in India or abroad.

Profile: Dr.Makani Hemadri, was a medical student at the Stanley Medical College, Chennai. After a brief stint in surgery at the Government General Hospital, he left for UK where he pursued further surgical training and obtained the FRCS from Edinburgh. A typical combination of the desire to return to India and the inevitable visa issues in UK saw him back in India for a few years. He says that the UK spoilt him for working anywhere else in the world. After spending some time in Kuwait he went back to UK and now works as a Surgeon at the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in England.

Dr.Hemadri is also an Honorary Clinical Tutor at Hull York Medical School and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Yorkshire Laser Centre. He has a recent MBA from Leicester. His current interests are day case and short stay surgery and innovative care delivery. Hemadri has been cited as a Hidden Hero of the NHS by the British Medical Association. He currently holds the award of Leaders for Change from the Health Foundation, London.
