International community warns India on HIV situation

The International Community has warned India that it is time to treat the HIV situation as a national emergency. Experts attending the Peoples Health Assembly at Dhaka, Bangladesh , have cautioned India not to be complacent about the looming HIV crisis in the country. Rebuffing the optimistic statement of Union Health Minister, Dr.C.P.Takhur, the experts said if corrective measures are not taken India might become another Africa in ten years. Last week, Dr. Takhur had claimed, “AIDS will not increase in India, of that I am very certain. I think with the efforts that we are now making the progress of the disease will be checked.”

According to U.N. agencies, India has the highest number of HIV infected individuals in the world after South Africa. Added to this is the shocking fact that some high-risk groups in the country have a prevalence rate of over 50%. Dr. Skolnik of the World Bank says that India should treat the situation as a national emergency and nothing short of that shall work. He added that all over the world the main cause of the HIV disaster were the denial, complacency and failure of the political leadership of the countries. Just celebrating AIDS Day will not suffice .It is the eradication of the disease that we have to celebrate. Its time we all pull our socks up!!!!!!!!!
