Initiative to Offer Medical Treatment to the Poorest

The Tata group and the Jharkhand government along with three major corporate houses have initiated India's first public-private partnership to form a trust to ensure medical treatment // to the people living below poverty line in Jharkhand.

Christened as 'Sarva Swasthya Mission Trust', it is a unique experiment based on a new concept of health security which would provide health coverage and medical treatment to the poorest people in Jharkhand at affordable prices, a release issued by Tata Steel here today said.

The Tata group has confirmed contribution of Rs 25 crore per year for a period of 30 years to the Trust. The Jharkhand government also committed to contribute to the trust, while other corporate houses were expected to confirm their contribution to the trust corpus soon, it said.

Other corporate houses which were involved in the trust were the Birlas, Essar and the Jindal group, it said.

The non-profit charitable trust would function on the principles of accessibility, affordibility, availability and accountability for the services offered to the state's BPL population.

Tata Steel has a 5 million tonne capacity plant in Jamshedpur which was expected to grow to a 10 mt plant.

The company has signed a mou with the Jharkhand government to set up a 12 mt greenfield project in the Seraikela-Kharshawan district of Jharkhand.
