Ingenious Biodegradable Heart Stent May Dictate Advancements in Heart Stent Technology

A heart specialist from down under has experimented with a novel type of heart stent that utilizes biodegradable tubes to clear blocked arteries. This could prove a blessing for// the multitude of people combating problems in the heart, due to blocks in their arteries.

Heart stents are no doubt an ingenious intervention, extremely advantageous in reducing the number of heart attacks and open heart surgeries. Yet stents have caused heart ache, encouraging the body to over heal and undergo a block again.

Dr John Ormiston has come out with a new device which use biodegradable stents made from molecules of polylactic acid that tend to break down in time. He asks “Why have a permanent implant for a temporary condition? If you have a broken arm you don't have a cast on it for ever."

Before the stents are implanted in the affected artery, they are coated with an anti-clogging drug. The stents are intended to work for 30 days and then designed to completely disintegrate within two to three months. This has been tested on 30 patients who have undergone the first successful 30-day check up. No adverse reactions have been reported. At least five additional tests would be required before these stents hit the market.
