Indonesian Quake Survivors Fall Prey to Tetanus

Tetanus is major problem in the quake affected areas of Indonesia. It is a Noncommunicable disease but it spreads through direct contact //with the bacteria Clostridium tetani. It is otherwise called as lockjaw as it affects the muscles and nerves resulting in stiffness of the jaw. If not treated properly it eventually results in seizures and pneumonia. According to the recent survey it has already killed 18 earthquake survivors in Indonesia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) along with the Indonesian health workers has started vaccination campaigns against tetanus and measles. The earthquake occurred on May 27 around Yogyakarta which resulted in the death of more than 5,700 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The Indonesian earthquake survivors were mainly poor laborers living under plastic sheets and tarpaulins and in donated tents. The bacteria enter along with dirt when an injury or wound or cut occurs. Hence WHO have asked the people to give importance to sanitation.
