Indonesia: A 14 year old teenage boy is confirmed to be severely ill following a human infection of bird flu, and is presently undergoing treatment//, an Indonesian health official has confirmed.
This is the first human case of bird flu in 2007; with this, the total human infection of bird flu in the region is 75, out of which 57 did not survive the infection. The boy is being treated at the Persahabatan hospital and his condition is critical, the health official confirmed.
It is estimated that since 2003, more than 150 people world wide have lost their lives to the H5N1 virus. This led to the culling of poultry in large numbers. In Indonesia, the timely action of the government to maintain good sanitation, vaccination of poultry and creating public awareness of the disease has helped in reducing the rate of infection.
