India becomes a member of IARC

At a press release Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Information and Broadcasting Minister said that Dr. Manmohan Singh has approved for a six million dollar scheme to join the International Agency// for Research on Cancer (IARC).

It helps to prevent and improve cancer treatments in the country. This membership will help in the development of cancer vaccine in India and help us recognize the environmental risk factors and facilitate the development of initial preventive measures.

The funds will be properly allocated and distributed depending on the country’s needs.

United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and 12 European nations are presently IARC members.

25% of the six million dollars will be paid in 2005-06 and the rest will be paid in 2006-07. There is also an extension of this membership for a period of five years (3.79 million dollars).

Due to this membership there will be an increase in the national research policies regarding cancer and its treatment options.

Also research on various environmental factors and occupational dangers that could be a cause in cancer development is studied.
