India To Register All Health Care Infrastructure: Ramadoss

India will bring in a new law to register all health care infrastructure in the country by May 2007, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said Monday here. //

"The act named as the Clinical Establishment Act will come into force by the middle of next year and will register all health care institutes, infrastructure and human resource in the field available in the country," Ramadoss said in a function entitled "Public Health Initiative: PPP model".

The minister said he had already sent a note on this to the cabinet and the government will complete the formalities soon.

From the day the act comes into force, all private and government hospitals will be given two years to get registered, he added.

After that, the nodal registering body will make the act mandatory for one and all. The act will be implemented through a three-tier structure with officers at the district, state and central level, said Ramadoss.

The law will also standardise all medical facilities available either in government and private hospitals, he said.

"We are also planning to set up a medical park which will enable us to manufacture medical equipment for the country. Currently, 90 percent of the medical equipments used in the country are imported. The new initiative in collaboration with the commerce ministry will cut down the cost in a major way," the minister said at the conference organised by Assocham.

For instance, a MRI Scanner, which costs over Rs.90 million, can be manufactured in India in less than Rs.20 million, the minister added by way of example.
