India To Launch Sex Education And Drug Awareness In Schools Soon

India is all set to implement a new teaching program that will explain all aspects of sexual development and substance abuse to children// in schools all over India from next year. The program aims to dispel the doubts and hopes to answer queries pertaining to sex and drug abuse.

The curriculum chalked out is tailor made to suit children from the age of five upwards, and would deal with a plethora of topics which include common myths and old wives tales that surround sexuality, sexual development, conception and childbirth, forthright explanations of sexually transmitted diseases,HIV Infection/AIDS, drug abuse, sexual abuse and the like. .

Partnering in this vision to free the younger generation in India from the ignominy of walloping in darkness and suffering from the consequence of being denied the access to right information from authentic sources, India’s National Examination Board has reached a decision to add to its existing syllabus, a new program which will include subjects like ‘drugs’,’sexual abuse’,’HIV/AIDS, ‘hygiene ‘and ‘nutrition’ for students in schools and kindergartens as well. .

Very often discussions fringing on sexual health, contraception, or pre-marital sex is considered taboo even today in most parts of India. Hence this bold step to revamp the educational system might prove useful not only in curbing some of the abuse lots of Indian adolescents are subject to out of sheer lack of information but also help to slow down the invasion of AIDS which itself has flared out because of promiscuous activities in the light of ignorance regarding sexual health. .

Sadly India tops the list of countries reeling under the scourge of AIDS with a staggering figure of about 5.7 million infected people according to the United Nations. Social activists are of the opinion that the number of infected people could be even higher since actual figures are hard to get to since many are discreet about it owing to the social stigma and fear of being ostracized. .
