India To Highlight Its Scientific Achievements

Plans have been announced by the Indian Government to produce some films with the National Geographic Channel (NGC) which will highlight the achievements of Indian Scientists, //in addition to evoking greater interest among its people in science. The name of the new initiative of the Government is ‘Science Safari’. The NGC will be responsible for producing a one-hour film and 15 two-minute shorts on the strides made in science.

The films will focus on nano-technology, the scientists of India, rural innovation and several novel initiatives in universities. The country has made tremendous progress in science over the past 50 years. The film campaign will be targeted at people belonging to all age groups. The films will be produced at a cost of Rs.20 million and telecast by NGC from May 2006. The Science and Technology Ministry will retain the copyright for the films.

After February 2007, the films will be taken from NGC and telecast by the state-run Doordarshan in Hindi and several regional languages. They will also be converted into video CDs and shown in thousands of schools across India.
