India -Penny Wise and Pound Foolish on Health Matters

India will need to pull up its socks on health issues, lest it pay a huge price of being labeled- ‘The global leader of chronic diseases’. If the present trend continues//, 66% of deaths by 2020 will be due to chronic diseases.

A study conducted by Assocham and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) on 'Working towards Wellness: An Indian Perspective' has shown the vulnerability of the Indian population to cardiovascular disease. It is expected that 30% of the population between the age group of 35-64 in India will be battling cardiovascular disease as against only 12% in the United States. India needs to spend precious on health, in the wake of the growing demands of globalization.

Today, India is grappling with both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Alongside is the presence of diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, and lifestyle ailments like diabetes. By the year 2025, India will be home to as many as 57.2 million diabetic patients.

India’s per capita expenditure on health is only 6.1% of the GDP. The need of the hour is to invest in healthcare programmes aimed at overall well-being of people at the workplace. The study also advises the institution of cardiac centers at important locations, to assist the many who will need cardiac care, especially in Asian and South-east Asian countries.
