Increase your life span by doing away with bad habits

Bad habits die hard! Indeed, but to have a long life, one needs to make a conscious effort to cut down risks to life, by giving up bad habits.//

A study tracked more than 5,800 middle-aged Japanese-American men, whose average age was 54. The finding revealed that the chances of subjects reaching the age of 85, was almost 69% for men with no risk factors whatsoever. In contrast men with minimum of 6 risk factors or more had only a 22% chance of living till they were 85 years old.

'If you're a middle-aged man, No. 1, go see your doctor. If you have your survival-risk score calculated, it's something you can think about if you want to be around in retirement or to see your grandchildren,' said Dr. Bradley J. Willcox, the study's lead author and a clinical scientist at the Pacific Health Research Institute and Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu.

The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
