Incompatible Blood Groups Not A Hurdle For Kidney Transplant

Doctors in Melbourne Australia have performed the first incompatible blood group kidney transplant.//

The doctors from the Royal Melbourne hospital have performed a kidney transplant despite the donor and recipient having incompatible blood groups. It was explained that Davorin Gelemanovic, 24, who is of the blood type O, is now carrying a kidney from his father, who has type A blood. Mr Gelemanovic says he has never felt better.

Explaining that patients could previously only receive kidneys from donors with the same blood type, Kidney transplant specialist Dr Shlomo Cohney said that the new technology now allows antibodies that would otherwise attack the donor kidney to be removed from the blood. He said,
