A survey conducted by Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Hospital and local health and education bureaus, Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu Province//, with 2,000 6-to-7-year-old children, revealed that number of overweight pre-school children were increased upto fivefold - 4.17 per cent are overweight.

Xia Li, vice-dean of the Health Centre of Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Hospital says since the past 10 years the ratio of overweight pre-school children was quintupled from 0.84% in 1996.

Wrong dietary habits, junk foods, fast foods high in calorie, fat and lack of exercise by sitting idle or watching TV, plays main role in creating overweight problems in childhood which was about 20% higher than normal weight, according to Xia.

Jiangsu Provincial Health Bureau conducted a survey with 8,000 school-age students and finds that 25.7 per cent of urban school-age students are above average weight.

Sheng, a researcher from Sports Science Research Institute, Jiangsu has made a survey says ‘the excess weight has certainly affected the children's physical health’.

He added that obesity can also lead to life-threatening problems, like high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, and even heart diseases and fatty liver syndrome.

A high percent (11 per cent) in popular cities like Shanghai and Beijing and only 7 per cent school students all over the country were found to be overweight - A national survey held in 2004 reports.

A combined effort by society, parents, schools and the students themselves only make campaigns on balanced diet and exercise a successful thing – experts relies.
