A new experiment shows the effect lighting has on Alzheimer's patients. Based on their findings Alzheimer's patients were found to talk to each other more than usual and were also less anxious.//

Studies in the past have shown that lighting improves mood and nature of Alzheimer’s patients hence researchers used this knowledge to make a dramatic change in an Alzheimer’s center . Researchers made the common areas 20 times brighter than it was before by adding new skylights and fluorescent and metal halide fixtures so that the inmates could go about their daily lives without any change in their routine and still be exposed to the lighting. Researchers say by having more light coming into the individuals eyes it suppressed the flow of melatonin in the morning and Melatonin, in turn, improved mood and helped individuals sleep better at night.

Researchers say as we get older, less light penetrates our eyes hence older people need three- to five-times more light than young adults. Studies have shown that one can improve their mood and sleep patterns most by going outside shortly after they wake up. Besides researchers say natural sunlight is the cheapest way to get more light because even on a cloudy day, natural sunlight is three-times brighter than internal room lighting .
