A new survey has reported that more than a third of men in Belfast are suffering from stress .

The survey launched on account of National // Men's Health Week, reveals that more than half of the men in Belfast feel a mental low at least once a month and a quarter of men feel that way every day (or) a few times a week.

The report shows that, while mental health is a major issue, a quarter of the men prefer to suffer in silence and do not seek help due to the social stigma associated.

Peter Baker, chief executive of the Men's Health Forum said: "There is a feeling that if you are man you have to be strong and macho and cope with whatever life throws at you. But this research proves that for many men, common mental health problems are impacting on their lives”.

"The aim of National Men's Health Week is to raise awareness of issues as they relate to men. We want health professionals to make their services more male-friendly so that men feel they have somewhere to turn to”. Many of them did not know where to look for help, according to Mr.Baker.

Work or study appears to be the key trigger for mental health problems (37%) closely followed by financial worries as the next most common cause (36%). Stress, anxiety or depression is causing more than a third (36%) of sufferers to resort to alcohol.
