Illegal Medicines Swamp SA Markets

The Cape Times has reported that illegal medicines are flooding the South African market with unregistered products being sold on the streets//. The report said many medicines claim to cure cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/Aids. A source in the country's health department said the industry had grown out of control. "The belief is that they can't close down the market because it's too large. So the department is not enforcing the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act," said the source. Alan Tomlinson, chairperson of the Health Products Association of SA, said the industry was taking a look at the issue and was generally within the law. "(But) there are little cowboys who manufacture in their back gardens who are harming our industry," he admitted.
