Did you know that every five minutes somebody in the United Kingdom is suffering a stroke? It might help to know that almost 40% of these strokes could have been averted with// timely blood pressure checks. The risk of a stroke is present among one in four people due to undetected blood pressure.

An examination conducted by The Stroke Association studied blood pressure readings for 19,318 people spread over UK. The finding revealed that 24% of the people suffering high blood pressure were unaware of their health condition.

Specialists have cautioned against this sly killer, which should be detected with timely blood pressure tests. Nearly one-third of people who suffer a stroke carry an enhanced risk of death within the first 10 days following the stroke. One-third of them could recover in a month’s time and the rest would need intensive rehabilitation to overcome the stroke related disability.

High blood pressure is also the cause of heart attacks. It is possible to prevent strokes by maintaining a check on blood pressure, which can be controlled by eating healthy, indulging in adequate physical exercise, and maintaining one’s weight.

Joe Korner, director of the Stroke Association, said: "We also know that many thousands of people are completely unaware of their own blood pressure levels. Many of those people have no idea that they have high blood pressure and that their risk of having a stroke is massively increased. High blood pressure can be reduced through medication and controlled by changes in diet and lifestyle.”
