ICAR develops bird flu vaccine

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has announced the arrival of the first indigenous bird flu vaccine, developed by the High Security Animal// Disease Laboratory at Bhopal. Incidentally, this is the only place in the whole of India that conducts tests for the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

ICAR Director General Mangala Rai said, "Viral diseases, such as the Avian Influenza, do not recognize boundaries, and the development of the indigenous vaccine will go a long way in tackling bird flu effectively. Since the disease has got recurring possibility, further research would focus on developing another type of vaccine."

The ICAR has funded an amount of Rs 8 crore for this project.
