An ayurveda library with a collection of nearly 50,000 books, including old and rare manuscripts on the ancient Indian art of healing, is coming up here. //
To be built at the National Ayurveda Institute at a cost of over Rs.20 million, it will be one of the biggest ayurveda libraries in India. It will house national and international books, journals and research papers and provide exhaustive ayurveda-related information under one roof.
'The budget has already been sanctioned for the library. It will soon open its encyclopaedia of knowledge for people,' said Mahesh Chand Sharma, superintendent of the National Ayurveda Institute.
The library will open with a collection of about 50,000 books. The institute now has 30,000 books and the rest will soon be arranged, he said.
It will house handwritten literature and manuscripts on ayurveda. Ancient ayurvedic writing on tree leaves will also be kept in the library. Ayurvedic literature in Sanskrit and its Hindi version too will be made available.
The collection and conservation of books will be done through the central government's National Manuscript Mission programme, under which special and rare books and material will be collected from various organizations and private sources.
A special online facility will be provided for accessing the library.
The library will be completely air-conditioned with separate spaces and stacks for children, students and researchers. "It will be an important learning centre for all national and international ayurvedic scholars," Sharma said.
Built under the planning of the Central Public Works Department, the library will be a three-storey building that is being finalised by a team of New Delhi-based architects.
