House of Lords to Consider New Mental Health Laws

A law may be passed in the House of Lords in connection with the mentally ill patients.//The proposed law may insist on detention of such patients even though there is no record of them having committed a crime. This has evoked mixed response from everyone.

This law may also try to emphasize on the continued treatment of such patients even after they are released from hospitals. If enforced this law would be functional in England and Wales.

The need to bring in such a law has come in the wake of increased cases of killing of people by psychopaths who are not detained.

According to Professor Sheila Hollins, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a balance has to be established between the patient and victim. Though people protection is important, the law should not isolate and brand the mentally ill patients.
