Hormonal Changes Causes Older Women To Have Twins

A new study has found that hormonal changes due to aging in older women could be a cause to have twins than the younger ones.Researchers at Vrije University Medical Centre in the Netherlands found multiple ovarian follicular developments, leading to the production of more than one egg, in the older women. //

The researchers analysed 959 spontaneous natural cycles of 507 women and found multiple follicles - the sacs in the ovaries where eggs mature - in 105, reported online edition of The Daily Telegraph.

Of the 105, only five were under the age of 30, 45 were aged between 30 and 35, and 55 were aged over 35.

They linked this with the hormone FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) since levels also increased with age, but was higher in women who produced multiple follicles.

The number of good quality eggs is low. But, if there are two or more follicles with eggs available, then simultaneous double ovulation can occur.

"These findings are a timely reminder to women not to delay their pregnancies if it can be avoided," Roy Homburg, who led the team, said.
