Hong Kong Citizens Fear over Poisonous Vegetables in Local Markets

Concerns of citizens over the poisonous vegetables found in local markets has paved for the establishment of a voluntary registration system// for local farms. Additionally, supermarket chains in Hong Kong would be required to set up a comprehensive tracking system for farm produce, according to official sources.

An operational pesticide monitoring system has been pointed out by a Hong Kong's food official that helped alleviate the citizens' anxiety over the poisonous vegetables found in local market. Carrie Yau, Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food highlighted the absence of any food poisoning recently and further added hat the system has been functioning effectively.

Vegetable samples would be collected for testing at all levels, import, wholesale and retail. If any sample is found to contain excessive amount of pesticide, it would be deleted from the importer’s list.

Referring to the policy to cap the maximum daily supply of chickens from China at 20,000, she said that the decision had been taken after a careful analysis of several factors, also mentioning that raising the quota during the upcoming Tuen Ng Festival would be considered.
