Highest Obesity Rates in Britain!

A government report released on Tuesday revealed that Britain had the highest obesity rates in Europe. The data from the Organization// for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) was cited in the “Health Profile of England” report.

According to the report, the adult obesity rates in Britain were the highest at 24%, while it was only 8% in Italy, 9% in France and around 12% in Ireland, Germany and Spain. The body mass index (BMI), height to weight ratio, of over 30 in a % of people was taken as the obesity measure.

The Department of Health had sent an alert 2 months back, stating that 13 million people in England would be obese by 2010, if obesity was not tackled. The highest rate of obesity was found in the town of Boston in Lincolnshire, eastern England. According to the report, there is a rise of 40% in the proportion of obese children between 1995 and 2004.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s campaign caused obesity to be brought in the political agenda in England last year for better school dinners for kids. As a result, ministers announced additional 280 million pounds funding.
