According to a recent study, women with a twin are at upto 5 times higher risk of suffering from premature menopause than those without one//.

The study was conducted on over 800 pairs of twins in the UK and Australia. The risk of premature ovarian failure (POF) at the age of 40 was 3-5 times higher in twins than women from the general population. POF causes the ovaries to shut down ten years or earlier than the usual period. Only 1-in-100 women get affected by ovarian failure in the under-40 category.

The U.S. scientists carried out an analysis of the data from 404 UK and 428 Australian twin pairs with natural menopause and compared it with a control group of 3,483 Dutch women enrolled for a breast-screening programme. In the control group, most of them reached menopause in their early 50s.

Professor Roger Gosden, of Cornell University, New York, who led the investigation, said: "Our study validates the hypothesis that twins have a statistically significantly higher prevalence of POF than women generally.

"The differences were large, at three to five-fold at both the 40 and 45-year threshold, and were similar in both the national registers."
