High Testosterone Destroys Nerve Cells

Recent studies conducted by Yale School Of Medicine have shown for the first time that excessive use of androgens or steroids to enhance muscle mass or for replacement therapy//, which results in high levels of testosterone in the body can lead to a appalling loss of brain cells.

High intake of androgens, or steroids was previously proven to cause hyper excitability, volatile and violent nature, and suicidal tendencies. According to Barbara Enriches, the professor of Pharmacology and physiology, and senior author such behavioral patterns may be an evidence of changes in neurological functions modified by steroids used.

To quote Prof. Ehrlich,”"Next time a muscle-bound guy in a sports car cuts you off on the highway, don't get mad, just take a deep breath and realize that it might not be his fault,”.

The key male hormone testosterone plays elemental roles in development, differentiation, and cellular growth. In nerve cells testosterone functions as a neurosteroid and can bring on changes at the cellular level, as a consequence of which, changes in behavior, mood and memory are brought about. Neurodegenerative effects and neuroprotective role of androgens have now been noted.

The studies conducted have revealed that excessive doses of testosterone can automatically commence cell death in culture of nerve cells. Apoptosis or cell death is vital in various life processes, which is inclusive of development as well as disease.
