Heredity Can Decide Your Drinking Habits

New study says that how much we drink may be decided by a genetic factor. //

The study has revealed that the gene called DRD2 Taq1A(C32806T) polymorphism and social alcohol drinking may be related in opposite direction. This means people with a stronger gene of this type will tend to drink alcohol less than people with a weaker effect of this gene. The gene is responsible for enhancing the pleasure that is derived from alcohol consumption, or the “high” people get out of drinking. A strong gene reduces this feeling of elation derived from the alcoholic drink and thus the person will not enjoy his drink as much as the person who will from effects of a less strong gene.

According to Dr Marcus Munafo of Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol and the lead scientist for the research says that the study shows that certain kinds of behavior do have a genetic component. This may be the reason why some people may be at a higher risk of alcohol consumption and its related health effects.

The study, which was conducted involving the drinking habits of about a thousand people, says that the result of the study will lead to research to predict the addiction pattern of people to alcohol.
