The adage “It’s never too late” holds true to the core if latest scientific research is to be believed.// The old class of thought which said that lifestyle diseases can be best avoided if the early life has been healthy is being refuted and British researchers say that if you are overweight at age 50 you can still do something to lower your risk of developing diabetes.

This comes as a whiff of fresh air for millions of depresses overweight people who thought that they had no power to prevent and avoid these diseases. "People should be living healthy lifestyles from as early in life as possible. It's never too late," NewScientist quoted researcher Mark Pearce of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne as saying.

Both animal research and epidemiological studies have found that poor foetal nutrition and growth can raise the risks for obesity and type II diabetes - a disease where the body becomes insensitive to the blood-sugar regulation hormone insulin. Adult obesity is a well-known predictor of developing diabetes.

Pearce led a research team that found that prenatal and infant factors explained less than five percent of the variation in insulin resistance.

However, adult lifestyle and body fat explained 22 percent of insulin resistance in men and 34 percent in women. This is a breakthrough in epidemiological investigations in diabetes and will help our population from falling prey to this often called “disease of the rich”. Diabetes is never good news to the ears as it brings along with it lot of other health complications and health restrictions.
