Health Sector Manpower Asymmetrical to Population

According to Health and Family Welfare Minister of Bangladesh, Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain the manpower in the health sector is asymmetrical// to the present population of the country.

Addressing a discussion as the chief guest at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on the occasion of the World Health Day he said that about 38,206 physicians were working in the country for a population of 140 millions people. The number of nurses to serve the nation was only about 20,034 showing that this number was both asymmetrical to the number of doctors as well as the population.

In spite of the fact that about 65 per cent of the total health budget was spent in primary healthcare, the budgetary allocation for the development of specialized medical sector was not enough.

The health directorate and the family planning directorate on the occasion of the World Health day with a slogan of World Health Organization (WHO) “working together for health” jointly organized the function.

According to the health minister the present government has taken special steps for bringing qualitative change in the treatment of different diseases in addition to strengthening the programs of primary healthcare. He opined that this resulted in about 700 specialized physicians, being created every year.

Dr Mosharraf stated that child mortality rate had come down to 65 in every thousand, which was far more advanced than its neighbors, India and Pakistan.

He also referred to the sanitation program that was undertaken to protect the future generation from various diseases by ensuring sanitary latrine for all.

The Health Minister urged all conscious people of society to cooperate in the development of the healthcare to make a healthy nation
